“Martial Arts & Sport Science” is a free information/free education website designed to further educate martial arts instructors and students, although the objective of this website is to look at martial arts from a modern scientific point of view, we mustn’t forget our traditional martial arts roots. Over recent times we have lost several great martial arts masters, some of which I have managed to get on video, I’d like to share this video footage with you as a tribute to these great men.

 Shindo Muso Ryu

The Shindo Muso Ryu was founded by Muso Gonnosuke Katsukichi around 1605.

Musso Gonnosuke Katsukichi (an up and coming undefeated samurai) challenged Miyamoto Musashi (one of the greatest, if not the greatest samurai in Japanese history) to a duel and was defeated. After being defeated, Muso Gonnosuke Katsukichi devised a new weapon (jo) and a series of techniques that he felt would give him the winning edge over Miyamoto Musashi's skills with the katana and wakizashi. Muso Gonnosuke Katsukichi again challenged Miyamoto Musashi to a duel with his new weapon the jo and defeated Miyamoto Musashi.

These jodo techniques of the Shindo Musso Ryu were originally developed by Musso Gonnosuke Katsukichi, over 400 years ago. Although these techniques may have gone through some change over the centuries, they still give us some insight to the techniques that Musso Gonnosuke Katsukichi developed to beat Miyamoto Musashi.
